Written for a 13-strong ensemble that includes leading Scottish jazz musicians as well as distinguished "traddies", it succeeds in honouring the Scottish tradition and O'Rourke's Irish roots with beautifully melodic solo fiddling as well as venturing into skillful, full-flavoured arrangements that hint at influences such as jazz, samba and Steve Reich style minimalism. It's big, mobile music, full of vitality and ideas, and nowhere more so than on the parting Falun Fine (Return) where the traddies trade solos with the jazzers, matching them blow for blow with gutsy invention.
