Fire On! from the Blazin' Fiddles provides a fantastic example of how a talented group of performers can squeeze every last bit of energy out of the fiddle. This energetic and enthusiastic first album showcases the talents of eight of Scottish fiddle players originally founded to demonstrate the range of fiddle styles from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Though the group is new, the musicians are not; Catriona MacDonald's CDs Bold and (with Ian Lowthian) Opus Blue have both been the subject of past reviews [catriona.html]. Another member of the group, Aidan O'Rourke, is a member of Tabache. The Blazin' Fiddles bring their energy to traditional and contemporary pieces with the same level of intensity, showing equal levels of spirit and excitement with tunes of any era. There is a good balance of different styles on the album, with the group showing no weaknesses regardless of the type of tune chosen. Jigs like "Crofting Counties," pipe reels like "The Cascade Set" and the waltzes "Farquhar and He ttie's Waltz" and "My Cape Breton Home" show the evident joy that the Blazin' Fiddles bring to their playing. The combination of this high energy level with the technical excellence found in the rich tones and harmonies of "The Greenland Set" showcases Fire On! as a first rate introductory album. The group's spirit and energy show that traditional Scottish music is as fresh, exciting, and relevant as ever.
